Checking Pixels for a 24 by 36 Poster
InMemoryStudio ·
A large poster amplifies small defects, but it is often viewed from farther away than a card. Judge both the image detail and expected distance.
Practical check
At 150 ppi, 24 by 36 inches corresponds to 3600 by 5400 pixels. At 300 ppi, it corresponds to 7200 by 10800.
Make it fit your situation
Do not claim quality from a DPI metadata field alone; the actual pixel count and crop determine available detail.
Large prints may be viewed from across a room, where a lower effective resolution can be acceptable. The print shop can assess its equipment, material, and intended use more accurately than a universal rule.
Before you finish
Use the final exported file for a test print before ordering the full quantity. Printer settings, paper, and trimming can change the result. Ask the print provider about its requirements rather than assuming that every machine behaves the same way.
