Checking Pixels for a 12 by 18 Poster

InMemoryStudio ·

Pixel requirements depend on viewing distance and the print shop's process. Multiplying inches by the requested pixels per inch gives a useful planning estimate.

Practical check

At 150 ppi, 12 by 18 inches corresponds to 1800 by 2700 pixels. At 300 ppi, it corresponds to 3600 by 5400.

Make it fit your situation

These dimensions refer to a full-page raster image; a portrait crop may occupy only part of the poster.

For another target, calculate width in inches multiplied by the printer's requested ppi, and repeat for height. Ask the shop to review the actual file rather than judging quality from numbers alone.

Before you finish

Use the final exported file for a test print before ordering the full quantity. Printer settings, paper, and trimming can change the result. Ask the print provider about its requirements rather than assuming that every machine behaves the same way.
