Short front-and-back wording ideas that leave room for the portrait and stay readable.

Give each side one job

A two-sided card has limited space. The front usually works best with a portrait, a name, life dates, and a short line such as “Forever remembered.” The back can hold a memory, a brief blessing, service details, or a thank-you from the family. You do not need all of these at once.

For a wallet-size card, keep the back especially short. If a prayer or reading is important to the family, choose the larger 5 × 7-inch version or simplify other content rather than reducing the type until it is difficult to read.

Short original lines for the front

These are starting points; use the person's name and the family's own voice.

  • In loving memory of [Name]
  • Remembering [Name] with gratitude
  • A life that made room for others
  • Always loved, always remembered

A personal message for the back

A nonreligious example: “We will remember [Name] for the warmth they brought into every room and for the small kindnesses that made ordinary days brighter. Thank you for sharing this day of remembrance with us.”

A brief faith-based example: “May [Name] rest in peace. We give thanks for their life, their love, and the memories we will carry forward.” If you include a traditional prayer, hymn, or published poem, confirm its wording and any permission needed before printing.

Read it at the final size

Review both sides at the size you will download. Check every name and date, make sure the photo does not obscure the text, and print one copy before ordering or cutting a larger batch. A short, legible message will be more useful to guests than a crowded card.

Frequently asked questions

What belongs on the front of a memorial card?

A portrait, preferred name, life dates if desired, and a short line are a common arrangement.

Can the back have a secular message?

Yes. A personal memory or thank-you can replace a prayer when that fits the family better.

How much text fits on a wallet-size card?

Keep it brief and preview at the final size. If it feels crowded, shorten it or choose 5 × 7 inches.
