Nonreligious Memorial Card Messages: Short, Personal Examples

Original, adaptable lines for a card when a prayer does not fit the service.

Write in a voice the family recognizes

A secular card does not need to sound impersonal. Begin with a real quality, action, or memory. “She always made room at the table” says more than a long row of general adjectives. If the back of the card is small, one or two sentences are enough.

Consider who will read it: guests who knew the person well and guests who may have met them only once. A clear, warm sentence works for both. Avoid private jokes that need explanation unless the card is meant only for a close circle.

Three original starting points

Replace these details with true ones and ask the family to approve the final wording.

  • A tribute: “We remember [Name] for quiet generosity, open doors, and the way every ordinary visit became a good story.”
  • A thank-you: “Thank you for being with us and for keeping [Name]'s memory close.”
  • A memory prompt: “Share one moment that made you smile when you think of [Name].”

Match the words to the card

Use the front for name, portrait, and dates if desired; use the back for the sentence. At 2.5 × 3.5 inches, a long paragraph can become difficult to read. At 5 × 7 inches, a somewhat longer message may fit, but white space still makes the keepsake more inviting.

Read the card at the actual selected size. Check line breaks around the name, ensure no word crosses a dark photo area, and have someone else proofread before printing.
