A smaller portrait can leave room for a longer remembrance, but it must remain identifiable. A tiny face should not become the price of keeping every sentence.
Balance the two sides
Keep the front primarily visual and put fuller text on the back when the template allows. Shorten the front message first. A 5 by 7-inch version gives more room than a wallet-sized card.
Final check
Judge the portrait on a physical proof, not only a magnified editor view.
