Choose the image that feels like them

The most meaningful photo is not always the most formal one. Look for an expression family and friends recognize, clear eyes, and enough space around the head for the template's crop. Ask those closest to the person which image they would want guests to take home.

If the design has a small portrait area, choose a simple image with the face near the center. A group photo may be precious, but cropping someone out can leave a soft, low-detail portrait; use the original individual photo when one exists.

Use the best original file available

A photo from a phone or camera usually prints better than a screenshot or a copy saved from social media. Avoid repeatedly forwarded images if you can get the original. Inspect the face at normal and enlarged viewing sizes for blur, compression blocks, or harsh filters.

A photo that works for a small card may not work at poster size. If you plan to use the same portrait across several products, check the largest output first and ask for a larger original if it looks soft.

Check the crop on every format

Booklet covers, cards, and posters can have different photo shapes. Keep the full face, hair, and any important part of the image inside the preview. Watch for hands or another person being awkwardly cut at the edge. If the crop is too tight, try a different photo or a layout with more space instead of shrinking the face until it is hard to see.

Make one printed test. Screen brightness can disguise a dark face or a washed-out background, while paper makes those problems easier to notice.

Frequently asked questions

Does the photo have to be recent?

No. Choose an image the family recognizes as true to the person, with enough clarity for the intended print size.

Can I use a photo from social media?

You can, but the original camera or phone file usually offers more detail and may print more clearly.

What if the face is cut off in the template?

Adjust the crop if possible or select a layout and photo shape that gives the face more room.
